Framing

My Favorite Places to Shop for Frames

Whether you're looking for a simple ready-made frame or a custom archival solution, these are the framing resources I most often recommend.

  • Dick Blick – Excellent selection of high-quality ready-made and custom frames, archival mats, and professional framing supplies. A favorite among artists and collectors alike.
  • Ampersand Art – My favorite source for premium wood cradled panels and art surfaces if you're framing or mounting artwork on panel.
  • West Elm – Beautiful modern and contemporary frames that complement thoughtfully designed interiors.
  • Canvas Place – Great source for custom-sized frames, especially for artwork with non-standard dimensions.
  • IKEA  , Target – Affordable, minimalist ready-made frames that are perfect for everyday display and easy to replace.
  • Michaels and  Hobby Lobby – Large selection of classic and decorative frames, often available at significant discounts.
  • Amazon – Convenient for finding frames in virtually any size or style, along with hanging hardware and framing accessories. Try to avoid plastic frames by search for "solid wood" frames.
  • A.C. Graphics & Framing – A Bay Area custom framing shop offering archival materials and expert craftsmanship for preserving original artwork.
  • Lenz Arts – A wonderful local art supply store in Santa Cruz with wide range of quality framing supplies and precut mats.

Don't Overlook Local Gems

  • Goodwill & Charity Shops – One of my favorite places to hunt for unique, high-quality frames at a fraction of retail prices. With a little patience, you can often find beautiful solid wood frames that simply need a new mat or a fresh coat of paint.
  • Local Frame Shops – If you're framing an original piece you'll treasure for years to come, I highly recommend supporting your local independent framer. They can help you select the perfect frame and use archival materials to ensure your artwork is protected for decades.

Framing Tips

Framing Tips (for works on paper)

If your artwork is not already framed, I recommend:

  • Using UV-protective museum or conservation glass whenever possible.
  • Choosing acid-free matting and archival backing materials.
  • Asking your framer to use archival mounting methods (never glue the artwork directly to the backing).
  • Leaving a small air gap between the artwork and the glass by using a mat or spacers.

These archival materials help preserve the artwork for decades and protect it from light, moisture, and acidity.
